Dr. Setboonsarng is a senior advisor to our customs and trade practice. He currently also serves as a board member on the audit committees of the Bank of Thailand and Banpu Pcl., and a member of the Board of Trustee of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines.
Dr. Setboonsarng had a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. He was a Thailand trade representative (a ministerial position within the Office of the Prime Minister), the first Thai deputy secretary general of the ASEAN Secretariat, a consultant to the National ASEAN Summit Committee, an associate professor at the Asian Institute of Technology, research fellow at the Thailand Research and Development Institute (TDRI), and a lecturer at the faculty of economics at Thammasat University. Dr. Setboonsarng was also a former, senior advisor for BowerGroup Asia and a former partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ customs and trade practice.
While at the ASEAN Secretariat, Dr. Setboonsarng managed the accession of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) to ASEAN. He played a key role in establishing the ASEAN Cooperation on Finance in 1996 and the expansion to include China, Japan and Republic of Korea in the regional currency swap arrangement, the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization (CMIM).
Dr. Setboonsarng advised clients in the automotive, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage, and tobacco industries on trade and excise tax structuring, and is experienced in handling complex trade disputes involving bi-lateral and multilateral arrangements within the ASEAN countries.
